Let's face it, making a Will may not be the most exciting thing to do, but by protecting your hard earned savings, property and assets, and putting matters in order, you can look after those people who matter to you most. In fact it's one of the most caring things you can do for your family - ensuring that they don't have additional pain and worry at a time when they least need it.
If you die without having made a Will, you die ‘intestate' (that's the end of the legal jargon for now). This means the State makes one for you. Not only will this mean your wishes may not be met, but it will create additional, emotional stress to the family members left to deal with this. And in today's sometimes complex family arrangements, that could lead to untold problems and financial difficulties.
If you are married or in a civil partnership, it may mean that your spouse or partner will not inherit all of your estate. If you are unmarried, it could mean your partner may not get anything at all. If you have no children it could mean that some of your assets go to other family members - maybe even ones you never knew existed, let alone cared about leaving your inheritance to. If you have no Will, you will not have appointed guardians for young children and they may even have to go into care while a court appoints guardians. If you are separated or even divorced, your ex-partner may be entitled to claim part or all of your estate, and may be put in charge of any assets you leave to any younger children.
Without a Will, you may not have sufficient protection from inheritance tax and your children may have to pay tax that could have been avoided.
Clearly, it is prudent to make a Will, and having one professionally prepared is a hugely beneficial thing for your own peace of mind, and that of your family. Whatever your circumstances, we will try to make everything as simple and straight forward as possible, putting your matters in order, in an efficient and cost effective way.
